'It would be improper': 17-year-old restaurant workers invite 27-year-old coworker to hang out after work, she explains that it would be inappropriate

Age gaps have gotten a lot of press in recent years, with many questioning how many years is too many years of difference for two people to be able to relate to one another and have a healthy relationship. For the most part, the discussion has been focused on connections of the romantic kind, but a critical eye has been cast on other types of bonds as well. Love is love (and friendship is friendship) right up until a gap in life experience presents a glaringly obvious problem.

In particular, the older person in any kind of age gap dynamic has to take care with how they present themselves. When it comes to friendship in particular, younger people can benefit from having older mentors, but most of the time, that relationship is going to look a lot different from when they make friends their own age and hang out with them.

A woman in her late twenties found herself grappling with this issue when she became friendly with a couple of her teenage coworkers, and they invited her to hang out outside of work. She declined and took this as a moment to teach them why she felt that it would be inappropriate for her to accept.
When she shared this anecdote with the internet, some people wholeheartedly agreed with how she handled the situation, but others felt she was missing out on an important opportunity for her younger colleagues. They couldn't reach an agreement on whether she had made the right choice or not.
